Geology & Traplines
To date, the geology of Eeyou Istchee has not been completely covered by geological mapping. Several mining and exploration companies and the Quebec Government have produced a large geological database that isn’t yet readily available. The CMEB has a mandate to offer mineral exploration, environmental and forestry information’s services in Eeyou Istchee. An accessible and high-quality geoscientific map will provide the Crees with better knowledge of the territory for the purposes of exploration and prospecting. The CMEB has the qualifications to create this necessary information.
Objectives
The CMEB will produce a 1:500,000 geological, mining and forestry map of the Cree Territory. This map will contain boundary information, specifically, the limits of Eeyou Istchee and Tallymen traplines.
Objectives related to this resource are to:
- compile geoscientific data in Eeyou Istchee
- produce a complete and easy-to-use map
- show all exploration activities and mineral potential in the Cree Territory
- define Eeyou Istchee boundaries
- highlight all Tallymen traplines
- provide Cree prospectors with an excellent view of the geology of the area and mineral potential distribution in the territory as well as the most interesting areas for mineral prospecting in Eeyou Istchee
- provide Cree trappers with a single source for rich information on traplines and hydrographic systems

Map Characteristics
To build a geoscientific map of the Cree Territory, the CMEB will acquire geological and hydrographic data from the Ministère des Ressources naturelles de la Faune et des Parcs du Québec. The mineral potential data, produced by the CMEB, are sourced (for the most part) from MRNFP and the following companies: Cambior, Soquem, Sirios, and Inmet. The boundaries and trapline data are produced by the Cree Regional Authority.
All these data are processed by technical geologists with vast experience in Graphic and SIG software using Corel Draw, ArcVue, MapInfo and Microstation on the SIGEOM platform. These software programs were selected for their quality, utility, and accessibility. MapInfo is very useful and easily accessible. The map will be interactive and easy to query online by Cree users for any geoscientific information (hydrology, mining, mineral deposits, geology, forestry, Eeyou Istchee boundaries and traplines).
The CMEB will present a detailed final map of the Cree territory in terms of geology, ore and mine location, new mineralization indices, forest evolution and hydrographic systems. This 1:500,000 map will include legends, keyword search capabilities, and descriptive texts. The 1:500,000 scale was chosen in light of the large surface area of Eeyou Istchee. This scale is commonly used for areas this large and can present a great of information.
